Rather simple yet very elegant, such plaques were affixed to wooden seats and the doors of the iconic Parisian "Métro" (subway) cars built by Sprague-Thomson from 1908 to 1936. More specifically, this cast iron and enamel plaque was affixed on the backside of a single seat (plaques affixed on the backsides of bench seats for two were wider than tall). It shows a large Roman number "I" (1) at its center, specifying that the seat was reserved for passengers paying the first class fare (seats for 2nd class passengers had to seat on wooden banquettes wearing plaques with the Roman number "II" (2).

The Roman number and geometric pattern of the plaque are both in relief and colored in pink. The countour of the plaque shows a lovely pale blue band. Due to the use of these colors, the plaque can be dated from the early 1920s (later plaques were grayish or brownish in color). Note also that the piece is trademarked towards the top. This slightly curved plaque shows minor scratching under the number "I" and a few chips along the edges, but remains in very good condition considering its age. The black back-side shows remains of brown paint,

As nostalgia of the old Parisian Métro with its wooden seats, old doors and enameled plaques from Sprague-Thomson cars are in high demand by collectors. A lovely piece of French history to display in your home or office. Measures 21½" x 14½" and is heavy.
